SALT LAKE CITY - Arizona running back Nick Wilson rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 15/13 Wildcats (9-2, 6-2 Pac-12) defeated No. 20/21 Utah (7-4, 4-4 Pac-12), 42-10, Saturday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
After going down 21-0 late in the second quarter, the Utes would score 10 unanswered points to pull within 11 points of the Wildcats, but Arizona managed to score 21 points in less than a two-minute span early in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
The Wildcats out-gained the Utes in total yardage, 520-384, after rushing for 298 yards and collecting 222 yards through the air. Utah managed to gain 213 yards rushing and 171 yards through the passing game.
After missing a 39-yard field goal on its second drive of the game, Arizona would later take a 7-0 lead with 3:23 left to play in the first quarter after quarterback Anu Soloman found the end zone from 11 yards out. Soloman's rushing touchdown was set up following a 51-yard pass to Austin Hill on the previous play and his score capped a seven-play, 86-yard drive that took 2:09 off the clock.
The Utes went three-and-out in its first four possessions, but would finally get past midfield in the second quarter when Travis Wilson rushed for 33-yards to get to the Arizona 42-yard line. Following a 15-yard personal foul penalty from the Wildcats, Utah managed to move the ball up to the Arizona 27-yard line, but just three plays later Wilson's pass that was intended for Kaelin Clay was intercepted by Arizona's Jourdan Grandon in the end zone.
The Wildcats would have to punt on the ensuing possession, but following another three-and-out from the Utes, Arizona drove 73 yards in four plays to score its second touchdown of the game when Wilson found pay-dirt from 17 yards out. Casey Skowron's extra point was good and the Wildcats led 14-0 with 4:12 left to play in the second quarter.
The Wildcat's would later go up 21-0 following a scoop-and-score from Arizona's Dan Pettinato. Tra'Mayne Bondurant forced the fumble out of the hands of Utah's Bubba Poole and Pettinato was there to pick up the loose football and take it in for the score with just 1:17 left to play before the half.
After completing just four of his first eight passes in the game, Wilson managed to connect on six of his final eight passes of the first half as he led the Utes to an eight-play, 75-yard score just before halftime.
The drive began with Clay catching a tipped pass from Wilson and the Utah quarterback would later complete passes to both Kenneth Scott and Devontae Booker to get the Utes past midfield. Two plays later, Wilson's pass to Clay went for 16 yards, but a personal foul call on the Wildcats pushed the ball up to the 11-yard line and Arizona called timeout with 13 seconds left to play.
Wilson would then find Westlee Tonga on the very next play for an 11-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left in the half, which pulled the Utes within a pair of touchdowns of the Wildcats heading into the intermission.
Utah was forced to punt following its opening possession of the second half, but the Ute defense forced a fumble and Justin Thomas recovered the ball for Utah. The Utes would then go eight-plays and 76 yards to pull within 11 points of the Wildcats when Andy Phillips connected on a 28-yard field goal to make it a 21-10 game with 5:14 left to play in the third quarter.
Arizona was forced to punt following its next possession and Clay looked to have made it 21-17 when he scored on an 87-yard punt return, but the touchdown was called back following a holding call. Despite getting into Arizona territory, the Utes had to punt the ball on fourth down and Arizona would take over from its own five-yard line.
Wilson would help push Arizona's lead to 35-10 as he scored a pair of touchdowns on Arizona's next two possessions. His 75-yard scamper helped give the Wildcats a 28-10 lead with 11:50 left to play and then just 1:10 off the clock later, he made it 35-10 with his score from 19 yards out.
Conner Manning would enter the game for the Utes on the next possession and after completing his first-career pass, Bondurant intercepted the redshirt freshman for a pick-six for the final touchdown of the game and following the PAT, Arizona led 42-10 with 9:48 still to play in the fourth quarter.
Wilson finished the day completing 16 of his 29 passes for 143 yards and the one touchdown (two interceptions). Manning completed two of his six passes for 28 yards and he had the one interception on the day as well.
Booker rushed for 142 yards on 23 carries to record his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season. He had a long-run for 61 yards in the game.
Tonga, Scott, Clay and Booker all had four receptions in the game, but Tonga led the team with 68 yards and the one score.
Jared Norris led the Utes with 11 total tackles (eight solo) and a pair of tackles-for-loss. Jason Fanaika had nine tackles on the day, while both Brian Blechen and Nate Orchard tallied six tackles in the contest. Orchard and Hunter Dimick were the only two Ute players to record a sack in the contest.
Tom Hackett, who had a 63-yard punt on the day and three total punts of 50 yards or more, averaged 44.6 yards per punt with five of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
The Utes will play its final contest of the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 29, at Colorado. Kickoff between the Utes and the Buffs is TBA and the contest will be aired live on the Pac-12 Networks.
