SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah has announced plans to build an outdoor tennis complex adjacent to the George S. Eccles Tennis Center on 500 South and Guardsman Way. The groundbreaking is scheduled for the summer of 2013 and the project is expected to take four to five months to complete.
The outdoor complex, which will be situated directly west of the indoor Eccles Tennis Center, will feature six tennis courts with elevated seating for spectators. The project will be privately funded and $400,000 of the $2 million estimated cost has already been pledged.
"We are fortunate to have one of the best indoor facilities in the country, and with the addition of the outdoor courts, we will have one of the best overall tennis facilities in the nation," said Mat Iandolo, head women's tennis coach.
Said men's coach F.D. Robbins, "In order for us to be competitive in the Pac-12 Conference we need to have a facility that is Pac-12 worthy and this certainly will be."
