Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
Opening statement: "It was a great effort by our team. We played an exceptionally clean game, no turnovers and only one penalty for five yards. Jordan Wynn looked good and was sharp. The defense played solid and our special teams played well, partially blocking a punt, and the return game was productive. We came out of this game injury free and that's big heading into a bye week. Now we have to go back and get a good week of practice in then prepare for Iowa State on the road."
On pass route selection: "We didn't run a lot of deep routes, but that was just how the game unfolded. Jordan is fine. He was sharp and is 100 percent."
On only being penalized once: "I was glad to see that. We have been stressing that since week one. We had a lot of penalties against Pitt, but the penalties have been going down each week."
On the defense: "They have played well all four games this season. The front four has played really well this season, not allowing a rusher to go over 100 yards. But we're still not creating takeaways and that's one thing we have to work on in the coming weeks."
On punt return adjustment: "[San Jose State] was punting rugby style so [special teams coach Jay Hill] put together a scheme during the game with Griff McNabb as an up-back in front of Shaky [Smithson]."
On timing of the bye week: "This bye week comes at a good time for us. It's good for us because we'll have a chance to get three or four players back. J.J. Williams, Brad Clifford, and two or three other guys will have a chance to heal and will hopefully be ready by the Iowa State game.
Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn
On throwing shorter routes: "We didn't throw longer passes because that was just the way the game played out. I felt good out there. My arm felt good. It was good to be back out there and I'm happy to get a solid team win. The O line did a great job throughout the whole game. I don't think I was touched the whole game. We didn't have any turnovers so it was a really clean game for us."
On the team's progress: "We are right where we need to be. We played a complete game and I feel really good about where we are heading into the bye week."
On Utah's first play from scrimmage: "Reggie [Dunn] got the pitch from Eddie [Wide] and Reggie saw the lane and just went. Reggie is so fast that once he sees a crease, he is gone."
Utah defensive end Christian Cox
On Utah's goal-line stand in the first quarter: "We have been in pretty tight spots a couple times this season. In our red zone defense, we take pride in holding our opponents to field goals. But we know we have to play team defense and give all-out effort. We had a great week of preparation so we knew we could go out tonight and put together a complete game."
On the team's progress: "I think we're in a terrific spot. This year, Coach [John] Pease's philosophy has really allowed us to make plays. And the team seems different this year, I'm not sure if it's because I'm a senior, but we are really close. We all have something to prove and we are playing for each other."
Utah wide receiver Reggie Dunn
On Utah's first play from scrimmage: "We had been working on that play for two weeks now. I got a good pitch from Eddie Wide and as soon as I caught it, I knew I was gone."
San Jose State Head Coach Mike McIntyre
On the game: "Utah played much better than we did. We were horrible on special teams. That's my fault as the head coach. We got one punt blocked and we got a fake punt against us that we didn't contain. Their defense was very good. Utah has very good team speed. Not many positives at all for us."
Did your tough schedule catch up to you?: "It sure looked like it did tonight. I wouldn't have said that before tonight, but I would now."
Linebacker Tiuke Tuipulotu
On the game: "I thought we came out fired up, but things didn't go our way. We played out hearts out but we didn't come out with a win. Special teams played a big part in this."
Were you surprised by anything Utah did?: "They did come at us with a few trick plays we hadn't seen that caught us by surprise. That reverse early caught us. We gave them a few points early."
Has the schedule taken a toll on this team?: "The schedule won't take a toll on us. It will just get us better prepared for the rest of our schedule.
Quarterback Jordan LaSecla
On how the offense played: "We couldn't get any first downs, once again. We started to run the ball later, but then we would get a penalty and shoot ourselves in the foot. We need to keep working on it."
On his impression of Utah: "They played awesome. On the short routes they came up on the ball. They were all over our routes. Their secondary was very good."
Comparing Utah's defense to Alabama's: "Alabama had phenomenal athletes at every position, but Utah was very disciplined and stayed in their lanes. They didn't get beat deep. They played great."
What happened on his punt that went into the back of one of his blockers: "I was supposed to get the ball 10 to 12 feet in the air, but I got it up like five. I needed to find a lane to get the ball away and there wasn't one. The third time I felt like they knew what we were trying to do and they had the right side overloaded."
