BERKELEY, Calif. - The Utah women's basketball team closed out its season on Tuesday evening with a 64-54 loss to California in the WNIT.
Utah finishes with a 23-12 record.
With Cal up 12-8 with 13:48 left in the first half, the Golden Bears went on a 15-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 27-8 lead. The Utes would rally in the final three minutes of the half with a 9-3 run to cut into Cal's lead, but trailed 36-23 at halftime.
Utah started the second half strong, outscoring Cal, 17-7, to start the half and cut the lead to three points, 43-40 with 9:40 left. Janita Badon led the Utes during the stretch with seven points while Taryn Wicijowski had six.
The two teams traded baskets for the next several minutes before Alexis Gray-Lawson scored to start a 9-0 Cal run with 6:10 left to pull the lead back ahead to 12 points, 56-44 with 3:30 left.
Wicijowski and Badon each had 15 points to lead Utah. Halie Sawyer had a team-high eight rebounds with nine points. Kalee Whipple scored eight for the Utes.
