LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Taryn Wicijowski scored 22 points while Kalee Whipple pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Utah women's basketball team to a 51-45 overtime win over New Mexico in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament.
It was a typical low-scoring game between the two teams. Utah held a five-point lead with 7:39 remaining in the second half, 35-30, before the Lobos went on an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead with 4:09 remaining. Sarah Halasz and Eileen Weissmann each hit three-point buckets as part of the run for the Lobos.
Tough defense defined the remainder of the half, as only one more bucket would fall in regulation. Jantia Badon's open three-pointer with 1:07 left tied the game at 38-38.
Overtime continued in the same vein. With the Utes up by a point, 44-43, Whipple hit her only field goal of the contest from behind the three-point line to give Utah a four-point lead with 39 seconds remaining, 47-43. Although Georonika Jackson cut the lead back down to two with a pair of free-throw shots with 30 seconds left, Utah made a long inbound play to allow Badon to get a breakaway layup and put the Utes back up by four. She would seal the win on a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining.
Badon was also in double figure scoring for Utah with 13 points.
Utah takes on first-seeded TCU at noon PT on Friday following a day off on Thursday.
