SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team was defeated by the Arkansas Razorbacks at Ute Natatorium on Saturday morning. The 17th-ranked Razorbacks emerged from the meet with a score of 158 - 84.
"Arkansas is ranked 17th in the country and they showed why today," said head coach Greg Winslow. "I wish we could have seen a bit more fight out of our girls. We definitely had the talent in order to swim with a team like this. Obviously, I'm disappointed with the outcome as this could have been a winnable meet for us."
The Ute women surpassed the Razorbacks in their strong relay race performances. The team of Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch, Hannah Caron and Natalie Edge led the 400 medley relay to a win (3:51.50), whereas Swartz, Zuch, Edge, and Kristina Evans led the 400 free relay to a win as well (3:31.74).
"It was a tough meet and we fought through it," Edge commented. "It was fun to race against a nationally ranked team. I'm proud of my efforts but I need to work on swimming smarter instead of swimming harder."
Edge also scraped a win in the 50 free (24.12), while Caron won the 200 IM (2:08.05). Zuch placed third in the 200 free (1:55.00).
Other notable Ute performances include Danielle Caldwell's season-best time achieved in the 200 back where she placed third (2:06.10). Maiya Otsuka earned the runner-up spot in the 200 breast (2:26.46) as well as third place in the 200 IM (2:09.05).
Ellis Walters was the highest-placing Ute woman on the diving boards, earning second place in the 1-meter dive (273.45) and third in the 3-meter (257.55).
"The girls got intimidated by Arkansas because of their name and the conference they compete in," Winslow said. "We need to fix that for next year, because we will be facing the same things in the Pac-12. We're going to use today as a learning experience in how to overcome being stressed out and scared."
The Utes will continue their season on Jan. 8, 2011 against Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
