SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn will have shoulder surgery on his throwing arm and will miss the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced today. Wynn, who had been experiencing shoulder soreness in practice, had an MRI last night.
Whittingham revealed that his sophomore starter initially hurt his shoulder in Utah's 68-27 win over Iowa State on Oct. 9, but recovered enough to play in the seven games that followed before reinjuring the shoulder in Utah's 17-16 win over Brigham Young on Nov. 27. Wynn will undergo surgery in the next seven to 10 days and the recovery period is estimated at six months.
He will be replaced by senior Terrance Cain, who has played in nine games this season, including two starts when Wynn was out with a thumb injury. Cain directed Utah to victories over UNLV and New Mexico, but has played sparingly since Wynn's return to the lineup.
Cain's backup in the bowl game will be redshirt freshman Griff Robles. Robles has played in four games, rushing 17 times for 124 yards (7.3 average). He is 0-1 passing.
Cain has a 9-1 record as Utah's starter, leading Utah to a 7-1 record last season before giving way to then-true freshman Wynn. Currently, Cain is completing 71% of his passes (51-of-72) with six touchdowns (2 interceptions). He has a pass efficiency rating of 163.94. He has also rushed 11 times for 66 yards and a touchdown. In the two games he started this season, Cain passed for 455 yards and averaged 227.5 yards per game. He set the school record for single-game completion percentage (86.95) against New Mexico on Sept. 18 by completing 20-of-23 passes.
Wynn, a two-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, finishes the year with a record of 8-2 as the starter. He ranks third in the MWC and 36th in the nation in pass efficiency (139.9), completing 186-of-299 passes for 2,334 yards and 17 touchdowns (tied for the 10th-best mark in school history). Wynn ranks second in the MWC in passing yards per game (233.4).
Utah has been in this position before under Whittingham. In Whittingham's first season as the head coach in 2005, starting QB Brian Johnson (now Utah's quarterbacks coach), injured his knee in game 10 of the season and was replaced in the regular-season finale and the Emerald Bowl by Brett Ratliff. Ratliff led Utah to a 38-10 upset of No. 24 Georgia Tech in the bowl game.
The MAACO Bowl Las Vegas will mark the first bowl appearance for Cain, who did not play in last year's 37-27 victory over California in the Poinsettia Bowl. Wynn was named Offensive MVP of the Poinsettia Bowl, passing for 338 yards and three touchdowns.
