Utes Hang On To Beat New Mexico State, 72-62

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Despite a late rally by New Mexico State, the Utah women's basketball team downed the Aggies, 72-62, on Wednesday evening.
Iwalani Rodrigues had her third 20-point game of the season with 26 points. Michelle Plouffe (18) and Janita Badon (11) were also in double figure scoring. Michelle Harrison had a career-high 12 rebounds.
Utah struggled early, going down 7-2 in the first 2:30 of the game. Levrets called timeout to regroup, after which led the Utes got into a rhythm with a successful 9-4 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 13:00 remaining in the half.
Down by one, 16-15 with 11:30 left in the first half, Rodrigues gave Utah its first lead of the game with a three-pointer that started a 9-0 run for a 24-16 lead with nine minutes left. The Utes led by as many as 19 points in the first half, paced by 18 points from Rodrigues. Utah shot 55-percent from the floor in the first half.
New Mexico State cut the lead to single digits in the second half, mostly off foul shots. Despite shooting 22-percent in the half, New Mexico State scored 21 points from the free-throw line. The Aggies came within six points several times, but could not come any closer.
Turnovers also hurt the Utes, as New Mexico State converted 15 points off turnovers, compared to nine for Utah.
New Mexico State was led by Tabytha Wampler's 23 points and nine rebounds.
Utah takes an eight-day break for the holidays, returning on Jan. 1 at home against Utah State at 3:00 p.m. It is Utah's final non-conference game before beginning its last season in the Mountain West Conference.
