SALT LAKE CITY--The University of Utah has accepted an invitation to play in the 19th-annual MAACO Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. PT in Sam Boyd Stadium. The invitation was extended today by MAACO Las Vegas Bowl Executive Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy, who said that Utah's opponent for the game would be announced this weekend. Tickets in the Utah section are available now at UtahUtes.com or by calling 801-581-UTIX. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPN.
The Utes, who enter the postseason with the nation's longest active bowl win streak at nine games, began the streak with a 1999 Las Vegas Bowl win over Fresno State. Utah's next bowl win was also in Las Vegas--against USC in 2001. Utah is 12-3 all-time in bowl games and its 80-percent postseason success rate is the best in the nation among teams that have played in at least 10 bowl games.
Utah is currently ranked No. 20 in the BCS Standings and is No. 21 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches' polls. The Utes are 10-2 overall with a 7-1 record in Mountain West Conference play.
"Getting an invitation to the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl is not only a wonderful reward for our nationally-ranked football team, it is also a reward for our great fans," said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill. "Las Vegas is a popular destination for Utah fans, as evidenced by the big crowds that have made the trip to attend our regular season games against UNLV over the past several years. The proximity of Las Vegas to the majority of our fan base, along with good weather, world-class entertainment and a 10-2 Utah football team, should make this an attractive bowl game for our fans. I know that Coach Whittingham and the players have had their sights set on this game ever since beating BYU last week, so I am happy for them and for all of us involved with Utah athletics."
Said Ute head coach Kyle Whittingham, "We are very excited about our invitation to play in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl. It's been a while since we have played a bowl game in Las Vegas and our players and coaches are looking forward to the opportunity. We are proud to represent the Mountain West Conference in its top bowl game and anticipate a strong turnout by our fans."
The MAACO Las Vegas Bowl will mark Utah's final game representing the Mountain West Conference. Next fall, the Utes will begin competing as members of the Pac-12.
