SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 4 seed University of Utah women's soccer team (5-15-1) fell in the MWC quarterfinals to No. 5 seed UNLV (11-7-1) by a 4-1 margin Wednesday in San Diego. Utah's goal came off the foot of first-team All-MWC selection Lauren Hair.
Utah fell behind just 6:43 into the game as Ashleigh Shoughro scored her 14th goal of the season. As Shougrho got behind the Ute defense and headed toward the net, Utah junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen charged out to try to take away the angle, but Shoughro chipped it over her and found the net, putting the Rebels up 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, at the 15:44 mark in the first half, Hair used her speed to pull the game level at 1-1. As Hair began to make her run, freshman midfielder Leslie Muirhead chipped the ball over the UNLV back line, springing Hair on the breakaway. The senior forward finished off the shot from 10 yards out, beating UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell, for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
UNLV got back on top in the 30th minute as Utah conceded a penalty kick for the second time this season. The chance was converted by LaChere Anglin, who netted her second goal of the year. The Rebels then made it 3-1 as Liz Billington found the back of the net from 15 yards out, tallying her first goal of the 2010 campaign off an assist from Jenn Wolfe.
Utah outshot UNLV, 16-15 overall, while shots on goal going were struck 7-4 in the Rebels' favor. Corner kicks went 1-0 for the Utes while fouls were whistled 13-5 against them.
"I was proud of the way the team fought during the second half to try to stage a comeback," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "Unfortunately we had a couple of tough moments in the first half and the Rebels took advantage of them. We have to credit them with some great finishing, and that turned out to be the difference today. The team fought hard and we were unlucky not get a goal or two and even things up. I was very proud of our three seniors today, Lauren Hair, Morgan Skeen and Christine Quinn, they all pushed very hard for us and played well. We are disappointed not to be able to continue in this tournament, but we can walk away proud of the way we improved and pushed through the second half of season in order to get here."
