LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Utah swimming team wrapped up its first day of competition against 17 other university squads Thursday night at the Arena Invitational at the Belmont Plaza Olympic pool.
"Swimming against 17 other schools is a good competition for us," said head coach Greg Winslow. "We had some really great swims with season-best times across the board."
Natalie Edge, Hannah Caron, Samantha Zuch, and Traycie Swartz achieved a season-best time in the 200 free relay when they tied for seventh place with ASU (1:33.80). The same group of women led Utah to a 10th place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:49.11).
Other strong performances for the women include Edge finishing 10th in the 50 free (23.42) and Caron placing 16th in the 200 IM (2:04.40).
Zuch also had a strong finish in 40th place in the 500 free (5:05.23) along with others. Jana Willsey and Kayla Buck finished in 50th and 62nd place in that same event with times of of 5:08.36 and 5:11.44, respectively. Both women shaved off about ten seconds from of their season-best times. Rebecca Bott also shaved five seconds off of her season-best time when she placed 62nd in the 500 free (5:14.55).
Major Robinson, Garrett Peterson, Luke Donohue, and Garret Beaman finished ninth the 400 medley relay for another season-best time (3:25.56). Beaman also assisted Bjorn Gunnarsson, Eric Murray, and Brent Murray to an eighth place finish and another season-best time in the 200 free (1:23.32).
Another achievement for the Ute men was when Brent Murray tied for 20th place in the 50 free with ASU (20.98).
"Tomorrow will be an even stronger day for us, especially with the women's sprinting events taking place," Winslow said. "Hopefully we'll see some all-time top 10 school times."
Competition for the Arena Invitational continues through Friday and Saturday.
