SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Despite having some of its strongest swims this season, both the University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving squads were defeated by Notre Dame on Friday. The Utah men came up short by a final score of 184-116, while the Ute women fell by a tally score of 185.5-112.5.
"This was an exciting meet," Utah head coach Greg Winslow said. "Our team had a lot of really great swims and even some season-best times. Notre Dame really put us through our paces, but this was the toughest I have seen our team swim all season."
Karson Applin was on the winning 400 free relay with Andy Lamb, Bjorn Gunnarsson, and Brent Murray (3:06.08). Applin and Lamb wrapped up the top two spots in the 100 fly, with times of 50.57 and 51.84, respectively.
Applin, Austin Fiascone, Garrett Peterson, and Garret Beaman led the Utes to a victory in the 200 medley relay as well (1:33.11).
Other victories for the Utes include the 200 back by Major Robinson (1:50.51), who was also the runner-up in the 100 back (51.84). Murray also took home a win in the 200 free (1:42.12), while coming in second in the 50 free (21.10). Eric Bonicelli achieved a season-best time when he came in a mere .02 seconds behind Notre Dame's Connor Wills in the 200 fly (1:53.30).
On the women's side for Utah, Samantha Zuch earned a victory in the 500 free (5:00.41) and was the runner-up in 200 free (1:52.41). Zuch, Natalie Edge, Chardonnay Biter-Mundt, and Traycie Swartz won the 400 free relay (3:25.75). Winslow believes this may be one of the top times in the 400 medley relay in the conference so far this season.
Other strong performances for the Ute women include Edge, who tied for first in the 100 free (51.43) and finished in second place in the 50 free (23.59). Hannah Caron also brought home wins in the 100 fly (55.35) and the 200 IM (2:04.17), while placing second in the 200 fly (2:02.31).
"I'm really proud of how both sides competed tonight," Winslow said. "This makes me even more excited to see us swim at Long Beach next week."
The Utes swimming team will next compete at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif., from Nov. 18-20 for the Arena Invitational as well as against San Diego State. The Utah diving team will be competing Nov. 18-20 in Tucson, Ariz., at the Wildcat Diving Invitational.
