COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen of the University of Utah women's soccer team has been named the Mountain West Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Turpen shares the honor with senior goalkeeper Aubree Southwick of San Diego State.
"We were really proud of the way Hannah came back from an injury this weekend, stepped up and was just as consistent as before," said Utah goalkeepers coach Mariel Wilner. "The play she made in the last seconds of the Air Force game was first class, saving the game with a 1-v-1 stop. That was a product of staying in the game mentally. I think this honor really represents her consistency this season and it's great to see."
In Utah's conference opener on the road at Air Force on Friday, Turpen made six saves to preserve the team's first shutout of the season as the Utes took home a 1-0 victory. Turpen followed that performance with two saves in the first half against Oregon State on Sunday, before coming off the field at halftime to rest a previous injury.
Turpen has not allowed a goal in her last 179 minutes of action, including the last 43:10 against No. 11 Santa Clara, the entire Air Force game and the first 45 minutes vs. the Beavers. Despite missing two games with an injury, Turpen ranks second in the MWC in total saves (60) and saves per game (5.00). She trails Southwick by eight stops for the overall lead.
The award marks the second time in her career that Turpen has been named MWC Defensive Player of the Week. Her first honor came on Oct. 12, 2009, as she performed admirably in two conference road contests, earning a 1-0 shutout at UNLV and helped Utah to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at San Diego State.
Turpen and the Utes host Wyoming Friday at 7 p.m., at Ute Field. The game will feature Utah's Power of Pink initiative, as Utah Athletics teams with the Huntsman Cancer Institute to promote and increase community-wide cancer awareness. All fans wearing pink will get into Ute Field free of charge. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free t-shirt and 1,000 pink gloves will be distributed as well.
