SALT LAKE CITY - A second-half surge accompanied by a double-double from Kalee Whipple lifted the Utah women's basketball team to a 54-47 victory over Wyoming on Wednesday evening.
Whipple had 25 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Janita Badon was also in double figures with 10 points, adding eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Wyoming took as much as an eight-point lead in the first half, but the Utes' strong defense kept them in the game. Iwalani Rodrigues hit a jumper at the buzzer to help get the momentum started for the second-half rally, as Wyoming led 25-20 at halftime.
Whipple started the second half with a three-point basket, followed by a breakaway layup to tie the game at 25-25. Over the first eight minutes of the half, the Utes took a nine-point lead, 40-31, with a 20-9 run. Badon had three breakaway layups in the run along with three steals.
Wyoming came back with a 9-2 run of its own to regain the lead, 43-42, with 5:50 remaining. Utah quickly rallied 30 seconds later to take the lead for good behind a three-point play as Whipple was fouled on her layup and made the subsequent free-throw.
Strong defense from both teams defined the final minutes of the game. Wyoming's Hillary Carlson made the final Cowgirl basket of the game with 2:12 left to put the team within three, 50-47. Whipple's layup with a minute left put Utah up by five and Wyoming was forced to foul the Utes down the stretch. Halie Sawyer hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to seal the victory for Utah.
Utah had a season-low six turnovers along with seven steals.
The Utes remain at home on Saturday, Jan. 30, to face Brigham Young. Utah will be hosting a Wedding Expo in a partnership with Brideaccess.com that includes a halftime wedding gown fashion show and cake eating contest.
