SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team (5-6-1) dropped a 1-0 decision to Pepperdine (6-3) Sunday at home as the Utes record slipped below .500 for the first time this season. Utah opens Mountain West Conference play at BYU on Saturday.
"I thought we did some nice things today and had chances to equalize," said head coach Rich Manning. "We pushed at the end of the first and second halves but couldn't get it to go in. It's pretty obvious that the team is pressing right now, and it's affecting our confidence and mental toughness. We just have to keep working at this. I love the team, I still believe we are very talented and we have the character to turn this around."
Pepperdine scored the game's only goal in the 28th minute as Callie Payetta headed in a cross from Michelle Spacciapolli. Spacciapolli received a pass down the right flank and played the cross to the far post, where Payetta met it with her head, sending it back across the face of goal and into the right side netting.
Utah outshot the Waves, 17-13, with shots on goal going 6-5 in favor of the Utes. Utah also earned three corner kicks to Pepperdine's two. The physical contest saw a total of 26 fouls whistled, with Utah getting called for 16 of them.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made four saves in goal for Utah. Roxanne Barker recorded five stops for Pepperdine, including a nice diving save in the first half on a Kelly Isleib direct free kick to the upper righthand corner. The Waves also had a team save as a defender cleared a loose ball off the line.
After starting 4-0-0 and earning a No. 21 national ranking, Utah has dropped six of its last eight contests, going 1-6-1 over that span.
The Utes are back in action Saturday, Oct. 3, as they open the MWC portion of their season against rival BYU in Provo, Utah. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. MT.
