Utah senior gymnast Kristina Baskett has been selected as one of four finalists for the 2008-09 Honda Sports Award for gymnastics. The award, which goes to the top woman collegiate gymnast, is voted on by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGCW).
The other three nominees are Courtney Kupets of Georgia, Ashleigh Clare-Kearney of LSU and Jessica Lopez of Denver. American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university, with the winner's program receiving $5,000.
Baskett, a 12-time All-American who has led Utah to three NCAA runner-up finishes and one third-place finish, will wrap up a great senior season tonight in the 2009 NCAA Event Championships. She will compete for individual titles on vault, bars and beam. Baskett already has an individual gold medal (bars, 2006), two silvers (vault 2008, all-around 2009) and a bronze (2008 all-around).
The 2009 Honda gymnastics winner will become a candidate for the Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded annually to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Former Ute Missy Marlowe in 1992 is the only gymnast ever to win the Honda-Broderick Cup.
