Saturday Individual Event Finals, 6 p.m. CT/5 p.m. MT
LINCOLN, Neb.--The Utah gymnastics team guns for a record 10th NCAA title tonight as the lone non-SEC participant in the Super Six. The Utes will battle Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas and LSU in the team finals, starting at 6 p.m. CT (5 p.m. MT).
Utah drew the balance beam as its first event. From there, Utah will rotate to a bye, floor, bye, vault and bars. The Utes must perform better on the beam tonight if they want a chance at a medal. Thursday, Utah had two falls on the beam.
Leading the way for the Utes will be senior Kristina Baskett, who won the all-around in the evening session on April 16 and finished second overall to Georgia's Courtney Kupets with a 39.60. A Ute has now won the silver medal in the all-around for the last four years, with Ashley Postell finishing second in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Also during Thursday's competition, Utah qualified two gymnasts in a total four events for Saturday's individual event finals. Baskett, who tied for first on bars and beam with a 9.90, and tied for second on vault with a 9.95, will compete in all three of those events. Bijak, the floor exercise victor on Thursday with a 9.90, will represent Utah on the floor on Saturday.
Baskett and Bijak were among four Utes to earn All-America honors. Baskett picked up five awards, including first team honors in the all-around and on vault, bars and beam. She was a second-team All-American on the floor. Bijak, a first-team All-American on the floor, won second-team honors in the all-around and on bars and vault for a total of four awards. Nina Kim and Jamie Deetscreek both became first-time All-Americans. Kim made the second team in the all-around and on the vault, while Deetscreek picked up second-team honors on the bars. Utah received a total of 12 All-America citations.
The only championship awarded tonight will be the team trophy.
