SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team (4-4) looks to pick up its second straight win Wednesday as Big 10 conference foe Michigan (4-3) invades the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. MT.
Utah is 2-4 all-time against Michigan. In their only matchup in Salt Lake City, the Runnin' Utes topped UM, 117-102. The last time they faced off, Utah defeated the Wolverines on a neutral court by a 71-54 score in Lahaina, Hawaii, in 1998.
Utah is coming off a 68-56 victory against Idaho State last Saturday and is looking to win two straight for the second time this year. Junior forward Jay Watkins (Memphis, Tenn.) was the Utes' top scorer with 15 points in the win over the Bengals, while senior center David Foster (Lake Forest, Calif.) registered his first career double-double.
The Wolverines are coming off a 67-53 home victory against Arkansas Pine-Bluff last Wednesday. After playing to a 32-32 halftime tie, Michigan outscored Pine Bluff by a 35-21 margin in the second half. DeShawn Sims led UM with a double-double (19 pts/10 rebs) to go with two assists and two blocks.
Utah's top scorer is junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.), averaging 12.8 points per game to go with 5.4 boards. The Utes are led on the glass by senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France) at 6.8, while senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) is the Utes' top assist man, averaging 4.1 helpers per game.
Michigan's top player is junior guard Manny Harris, who leads the team in all three major offensive categories. He is pouring in 21.1 points per game, grabbing 8.7 boards and dishing out 5.4 assists per contest. Harris also leads the Wolverines with 14 steals.
Utah head coach Jim Boylen is in his third season at the helm and holds a 46-29 (.613) record. Michigan is coached by John Beilein, also in his third year, with a 35-39 (.473) mark.
