SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team looks to continue its winning streak in the new year against SMU on Saturday, Jan. 2. The Utes have won six of their last seven games. The game is available on radio at KALL 700 AM with live stats and video feed available at UtahUtes.com.
Utah rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat Oregon, 89-86, in overtime on Dec. 22 in its last game. Utah had three players score 20 points in the win: Janita Badon (29), Kalee Whipple (25) and Taryn Wicijowski (23). The last time the Utes had three players score 20 points in a game was back on Dec. 28, 1990, when Kristi Smith (20), Tanya Zachary (24) and Karen Alcorn (20) all scored 20 points in an 89-83 loss to UCLA. The Utes raised their record to 4-1 in games decided by five points or less this year.
SMU (8-2) started the season 5-0 and has won three of their past four games. Christine Elliott is averaging 14.8 points per game, ranking fifth in C-USA, and also leads the team with 6.9 rebounds. Brittany Gilliam is averaging 12.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game with 21 steals. SMU plays Hofstra and Texas Southern this week before taking on the Utes.
Utah leads the all-time series with SMU, 5-4. The Mustangs won the last meeting in 2001, 49-48, in Dallas, while the Utes took the win the last time the teams met in Salt Lake City, 79-40, in 2000.
