SALT LAKE CITY - Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards were conferred on 64 University of Utah student-athletes today by the conference office.
The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
Three male skiers and eight women earned the honor. Ian Havlick, Tague Thorson and Thomas Zumbrunn represented the men, while Annelies Cook, Mikaela Grassl, Eva Huckova, Sarah MacCarthy, Zoe Roy, Sara Schweiger, Sofia Smith and Madeleine Talkington represented the women's squad.
Both of Utah's track and field and football teams saw a school-best nine student-athletes recognized. That number is followed by the women's ski team, the women's soccer team and the men's swimming and diving team, each with eight honorees. Women's cross country (six), women's gymnastics (five) and men's skiing (three) followed, and the women's tennis and men's basketball teams each had two make the list. The baseball, women's basketball, men's tennis and volleyball teams all had one singled out.
