THE MEET
Postseason play begins for the No. 2-ranked Utah gymnastics team on Saturday, April 12 at the NCAA North Central Regional Championship in Minneapolis. The meet will be hosted by the University of Minnesota and held in the Sports Pavilion, starting at 6 p.m. Central Time (5 p.m. MDT). The North Central regional teams with final national rankings (where applicable) follow: No. 2 Utah, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 14 Arizona, No. 23 Iowa, Southern Utah and Minnesota. Live scoring and video streaming will be provided free of charge at gophersports.com. There will be no TV.
AT STAKE
Utah must finish in the top two at the North Central Regional Championship in order to advance to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., April 24-26. Twelve teams will advance from six regional sites.
QUICK STICKS
Utah has finished as the NCAA runner-up at the last two championships (2006-07) ... The Utes own 10 national titles, most recently in 1995 ... Utah hopes to qualify for a record 27th straight NCAA Championship. Utah is the only program in the nation to qualify for all 26 NCAA Championships to date (32 consecutive national appearances including the AIAW years) ... The Utes enter the 2008 postseason ranked No. 2 in the nation with a 197.255 regional qualifying score (RQS). Utah's high score was a 197.750 against Minnesota on Feb. 1 ... Utah has been ranked in the top three all season, including nine weeks at No. 2 and three weeks at No. 3 ... Utah is the top ranked vaulting team in the nation (49.445 RQS).
COMPARATIVELY SPEAKING
Utah is 6-1 against ranked teams this year, with wins over (then) No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Michigan, No. 7 Oregon State, No. 9 UCLA, No. 11 Nebraska and No. 20 Arizona State. Utah lost to No. 3 Florida.
ATTENDANCE CHAMPS
Utah won its 24th gymnastics attendance title in the last 27 years by averaging 12,771 spectators to its six home meets in 2008. It is the third highest season attendance average in Utah and NCAA gymnastics history. The Utes drew an NCAA record 15,447 fans to their final home meet of the season against BYU on Mar. 28. Utah has averaged 10,840 fans a meet over the last 17 years.
MINNESOTA NICE
Utah is 14-0 all-time in UM's Sports Pavilion, including a 10-0 mark against the Gophers. Four of the wins in the Sports Pavilion came at the 2000 NCAA North Central Championships against West Virginia, Denver, Utah State and Southern Utah. The 14-0 mark noted above does not include Utah's NCAA Championship in 1992 - which was hosted by UM but held in St. Paul.
SHE'S NO. 1
Utah's 15-time All-America senior Ashley Postell finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the all-around (39.705 RQS), on beam (tie, 9.935) and on vault (9.965).
NCAA CHAMPION UTES
Ashley Postell and Kristina Baskett are looking to add to their NCAA postseason championship portfolio. Postell is the defending NCAA balance beam champion and a four-time regional winner. Her regional titles include the 2007 West Region all-around, bars and beam gold, and the 2005 North Central region bar championship. Baskett was the 2006 NCAA bar co-champion as a freshman and the 2006 West Region vault champ.
UTE NOTES
Ashley Postell is Utah's all-time leader in career all-around victories (28) and is tied for the school record in career victories (112 event and all-around). For more on Postell and the record book, see boxed inset on page 1 ... Utah has not counted a fall this season and has just nine falls total, "hitting" 279-288 routines for a 97% success rate. Utah has just two falls on the road (142-144) ... A Ute has won or tied for first in 54 of the 60 individual and all-around competitions to date ... Postell has earned at least one victory in every meet ... Seven Utes are without a fall: Annie DiLuzio (29-29),
Kyndal Robarts (22-22), Jessica Duke (16-16), Beth Rizzo (11-11), Katie Kivisto (11-11),
Gael Mackie (8-8) and Stephanie Neff (6-6) ... Ute event and/or all-around winners are Postell (39), Kristina Baskett (11), Daria Bijak (4), DiLuzio (3), Nina Kim (2), Mackie (1), Neff (1) and Rizzo (1).
UTAH AT REGIONALS
This marks the 33rd-consecutive regional appearance for the Utes, who have qualified for regionals and nationals every year since becoming a varsity program back in the 1975-76 season. Utah has won 24 regional titles (including 21 of 26 NCAA) and finished second the remaining years. Utah belongs to the North Central region but is competing at the North Central Championships for just the fifth time in 10 years under the current format.
REGIONAL ROTATION
The rotation order at the six regional championships was determined through a random draw by the NCAA office. Utah's rotation order will be: Bye, Bars, Beam, Bye, Floor, Vault. Rotating with Utah will be Utah State's Nikki Felley.
