ATHENS, Ga. -
The Utah gymnastics team joins four Southeast Conference powers and one from the Pac-10 in the 2008 NCAA Super Six Championship tonight starting at 6 p.m. Utah, which owns a record 10 national championships, but none since 1995, hopes to knock off favored Georgia, as well as Florida, Alabama, LSU and Stanford.
The Utes have placed second at the last two NCAA Championships to Georgia - a team the Utes placed second behind again last night in the qualifying round. Also advancing from the night session was Stanford, while Florida, Alabama and LSU came out of the afternoon prelim.
Utah will start the Super Six competition on the balance beam - for the second straight night walking the plank at the same time Georgia is on the floor exercise. All six Utes completed relatively error-free beam routines under the same circumstances on Thursday - unfazed by frequent deafening cheers for the Bulldog floor performers in sold out Stegeman Coliseum.
From beam, Utah goes into its first bye of the night, returning on floor, then vault. Utah takes a final bye before finishing the night on the bars.
Only the team champion is decided in tonight's Super Six. Thursday, the all-arounder was determined, with Ute Ashley Postell placing second for the third straight year. The NCAA's conclude on Saturday with the individual event championships.
On Thursday, Postell led a quartet of Ute All-Americans by winning five awards - bringing her career total to a national record 20. Postell passed Alabama's Jeana Rice, who won 18 All-America awards from 2001-04. In addition, Postell's 17 first-team All-America honors is tied for the most ever in NCAA gymnastics with former Alabama gymnast Dee Foster (1990-93).
Other Utes who earned All-America status (which was determined on Thursday) were Kristina Baskett (four first-team), Kyndal Robarts (one first-team) and Daria Bijak (two second-team).
