SALT LAKE CITY -
A record-setting crowd for the Utah-Brigham Young gymnastics meet last Friday in the Huntsman Center propelled the Utes to the 2008 NCAA gymnastics attendance title. The Utes drew 76,623 fans to their six home meets for an average of 12,771 fans per meet - the third highest season average in school and NCAA gymnastics history.
It marks the 24th time in the last 27 years that the Utes have led the nation in gymnastics attendance. Utah has averaged nearly 11,000 fans to its home meets over the last 17 seasons and its all-time record average was 13,164, set in 1993.
Utah, which had an overflow crowd of 15,447 on hand for its 197.10-193.85 win over BYU on March 28, broke its own previous national attendance record of 15,238, set back in 1991 against Cal State Fullerton. Last week's attendance marked Utah's fourth all-time crowd of 15,000-plus, but the first since 1993.
