OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Utah's swimming and diving team completed day two at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships. The Utes sit fourth in women's competition with 210 points and sixth in the men's competition with 134 points.
The women's 200 free relay team led the way for Utah. The team of Natalie Edge, Annie VanLeeuwen, Kristina Evans and Jennifer Fredsall placed third. They swam a time of 1:32.08 which was an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Beth Gunderson placed fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.46, while teammate Maiya Otsuka placed eighth (2:06.17). Gunderson's time just missed the school record by half a second.
Edge finished fifth in the 50 free with her time of 23.19. Her finish was an NCAA-B provisional qualifying time. In the same event Fredsall placed seventh (23.30), VanLeeuwen placed eighth (23.43), and Evans finished ninth (23.66). All four women in the 50 free swam times that were in the top eight in Utah history.
Diver Anna Braszkiewicz placed eight in the three-meter diving. Braszkiewicz earned a total of 270.35 points in the event.
For the men, Garret Beaman placed fifth in the 200 IM, swimming a time of 1:50.83. Marco Ferraro finished sixth in the 500 free with a time of 4:29.44. Tanner Folster placed 10th in the 50 free, finishing in a time of 20.88.
"It is a lot of fun to see our hard work paying off," says head coach Greg Winslow. "We are swimming hard, having fun and re-writing the Utah record book. I'm really proud of our team and look forward to continuing our efforts tomorrow."
Utah has completed two of the four days of competition. The Utes will resume competition on Friday and conclude the meet on Saturday.
