SALT LAKE CITY - The Sporting News has selected Utah senior quarterback Brian Johnson as the Mountain West Conference Offensive MVP and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham as the league's Coach of the Year. Both Johnson and Whittingham were previously recognized as the MWC's top offensive player and coach on the official all-conference team, as determined by the league's head coaches and media.
Johnson, Utah's all-time winningest quarterback with a 25-7 career record, leads an offense that is ranked 15th in the nation in scoring offense. He was one of five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award.
Whittingham is a finalist for the Liberty Mutual and Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year awards after leading Utah to a school record-tying 12-0 record, the MWC championship (Utah went 8-0 in league games) and a berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
