Scouting the WBCA Classic Opponents
Utah continues at the WBCA Classic against Gonzaga before facing Marquette to close out the tournament.
Gonzaga, which is receiving votes in both polls, has won the last four West Coast Conference Championships. The Zags are 5-1 on the year after falling to Marquette, 80-77, on the first day of the WBCA Classic. Reigning WCC Player of the Year Heather Bowman is one of three players averaging double digits in scoring. She also leads the team in rebounding.
Utah holds a 4-2 lead in the series with Gonzaga. The two teams have not played since 2006, a 57-45 Gonzaga victory. The Utes and Bulldogs have split the last two games of the series, 2-2. This is the first time they will face each other on a neutral court.
Marquette, which is also receiving votes, has a 5-0 record. Krystal Ellis, an AP honorable mention All-American last season, leads the Golden Eagles with 13.2 points per game. Four other Bulldogs are also averaging double figures.
This is the first meeting between Marquette and Utah.
Last Time Out
The Utah women's basketball team dropped its first game of the WBCA Classic, 65-57 to No. 16/15 Virginia.
The Utes (1-3) lost their third straight game. They were led by Morgan Warburton with 18 points and Katie King and Kalee Whipple with 10 each.
Whitney Edwards scored 15 points, Britnee Miller 13 and Aisha Mohammed 11 to pace the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers scored the last six points of the period on 3-pointers by Whitney and Ariana Moorer for a 28-22 halftime advantage and then ran off the first 10 points of the second half to grab a commanding 38-22 lead.
The Utes narrowed the Cavalier lead to four points with 26 seconds left at 59-55 on a shot by Warburton, but Virginia free throws and defensive stops down the stretch sewed up the win.
Utah vs. Ranked Opponents
Utah is 0-2 this season against ranked opponents. Utah fell to No. 7/8 Louisville on Nov. 25, 59-48 and lost to No. 16/15 Virginia, 65-57. Several of the Ute's opponents this year are either ranked or are receiving votes in one or both polls.
Warburton Moves Up the Career Scoring Charts
Morgan Warburton is the only current player in the MWC who is already at 1,000 career points. She has 1,350, moving into 10th all-time at Utah. Jane Quimby (1977-81) is 9th with 1,385 career points.
