The Utah gymnastics team is ranked No. 2 in the preseason coaches' poll, released today. The NCAA runner-up for the past three years, Utah received 770 points and two first-place votes, while No. 1 ranked Georgia claimed 814 points and 26 first-place votes.
The rest of the top six includes Florida (742), UCLA (699), Stanford (676) and Alabama (634). The Bruins received four first-place votes and Michigan, which was ranked No. 8, got one.
Utah, which will hold its annual Red Rocks Preview on Dec. 12, will meet five of the teams ranked in the preseason top 10. Utah's season-opener is against No. 4 UCLA on Jan. 9, followed by a trip to No. 1 Georgia on Jan. 19. Utah competes at No. 9 Oregon State on Jan. 30, and hosts No. 8 Michigan on Feb. 20 and No. 3 Florida on March 13.
Other teams on Utah's home schedule are Washington (Jan. 23), a tri-meet with Brigham Young, Southern Utah and Texas Woman's on Feb. 6 and No. 24 Arizona State on Mar. 6.
The 2009 Utes return five All-Americans, including seven-time All-American Kristina Baskett. Now a senior, Baskett was the NCAA uneven bar champion in 2006 and placed second on the vault and third in the all-around at last April's NCAA Championships. Another headliner is three-time All-America junior Daria Bijak, who competed for the German Olympic team this past summer in Beijing.
