DENVER, Colo. - Sophomore forward Lauren Hair (Alpine, Utah) of the University of Utah soccer team has been named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Hair buried three goals in Utah's two wins over the weekend, including both game-winning strikes.
"Lauren's work ethic and intensity on the field have been a great catalyst for our team," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "Throughout the season she has been able to track down long balls, create offense through good defense make good runs. She has gotten in the box and drawn penalty kicks. She has done a lot to help our team, but until last weekend she hadn't finished. That was the one piece of the puzzle missing and it is a really positive sign for Lauren and the team that she was able to break through this weekend. I know she will continue doing all of those other things, and scoring adds another dangerous dimension to her game."
Hair's third goal of the weekend was arguably the most important one of the year for the Utes thus far. With her double-overtime conversion against Wyoming Sunday, Hair gave the Utes a 1-0 win and sole possession of second place in the conference. With a win or a tie against Air Force in their final regular-season game this Friday, Utah will earn a first-round bye in the MWC Tournament.
Against Seattle Friday, Hair netted the third and fourth goals in a 4-3 non-conference victory. After drawing a foul in the Seattle box, Hair stepped up and buried the penalty kick for her first of the game. Later in the contest, she struck a left-footed gem that found the upper right-hand corner of the Redhawk net, putting the Utes up 4-2 and notching the eventual game-winner.
The weekly honor is the first of Hair's career. She becomes the third Ute to earn a weekly MWC honor this year. Hair joins junior midfielder Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah), who was named Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13, and junior goalkeeper Emalee Rogers, who earned the defensive version of the award on Sept. 15.
Hair has now tallied four goals on the year, tying her season-output from 2007, and has notched one assist for a total of nine points. Three of her four goals have been game-winners, placing her second on the team in game-winning strikes to Isleib's four.
