SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah gymnastics team begins its quest for an 11th national championship on Thursday, April 26 at 7 p.m. Mountain Time on its home floor. The Utes are competing in the second of Thursday's two preliminary sessions and must finish in the top three from a field that also includes UCLA, Stanford, LSU, Michigan and Denver to advance to the Super Six team finals on Friday.
Leading the way for the Utes is 10-time All-America junior Ashley Postell, who placed second in the nation in the all-around last year and qualified for individual finals on all four events. Postell placed third in the all-around as a freshman in 2005.
Other leaders returning from last year's NCAA runner-up Ute team are senior seven-time All-American Nicolle Ford, and defending NCAA uneven bars champion Kristina Baskett - a freshman.
Utah, the only team to qualify for all 26 NCAA Championships, goes into the championships coming off its best meet of the season. The Utes won the West Regional with a season-high 197.325 score, led by winning all-arounder Postell and co-runners-up Ford and Baskett.
The Utes have qualified for the Super Six 12 times in the 14-year history of the program and are seeking their seventh-straight Super Six berth.
The first session begins at 1 p.m. in the Huntsman Center and features Oregon State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Georgia, Florida and Alabama.
Tickets to both sessions, as well as Friday and Saturday night's competitions, still remain and can be purchased by phone (801-581-UTIX)m at the Huntsman Center box office and online.
