OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday. The women finished second with 618 points and qualified Amber Walter and Alison McInturff for the NCAA Championships in March. The Ute men placed fifth overall with a score of 459.5. BYU won the women's championships and UNLV won its third straight men's title.
Utah's, Walter was named MWC Women's Swimmer of the Meet, while teammate Kelsey Patterson garnered MWC Women's Diver of the Meet honors.
For the women, the final day of competition saw Utah's Walter win the 100 free with a time of 50.09. The victory was her third individual title of the Championships. The 400-free relay team of Annie VanLeeuwen, Walter, Shannon McQueen and McInturff finished second with a time of 3:23.81. Their 400-free relay time is a new Utah school record. Marissa Martin placed third in the 200 back (2:02.97). Rachel Curci finished fourth in the 1650 free with a time of 16.59.27. In the 200 fly Kelly McIntyre place fourth (2:05.37) and Jennifer Fredsall finished fifth (2:06.07).
"We're disappointed that we didn't win but it was a great battle," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "We've battled BYU all season long and we won the regular season but they won the post season. We won our share of events but just didn't come out on top."
On the men's side, Andrew Cole had a third-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:48.91. Michel DeCarolis placed third in the 200 breast with his time of 2:02.48. Marco Ferraro finished sixth (15:42.47) and Adam Oliver seventh (15:48.58) in the 1650 free. Diver, Andrew Jones finished fourth in the platform diving with a score of 290.10.
"I'm so proud of our guys," states Litzinger. "We swam well and had a number of best times. Our seniors have had a great four years and congratulations go to them for the job they did and the support for this program that they have given. It's been a great ride and I'm proud of every one of them."
The MWC Championships concludes the 2006-07 campaign for the Utes. Utah's women finished with a 10-0 record overall and 8-0 in the MWC. The Ute men finished 5-6 overall and 2-3 in MWC competition. The Women's NCAA Championships will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., March 8-10 for those individuals that qualified. Utah will send two swimmers to the Championships.
