Opening Comment
It's been a of couple weeks, but touching on Colorado State, I think we played a solid game against them. I thought that we ran the ball well and we shored up the defense. We got to their quarterback seven times, and I think that was the difference in the ball game.
We played well on both sides of the ball on third down. Our defense on third down has been good all year, and I think we got a lot better on offensive third downs against Colorado State.
Special team did a great job for us, and Brian Johnson did a great job running the offense, while Darrell Mack had another solid running game.
This week, Wyoming comes to town. They have the No. 6 defense in the country, so we expect to see a solid defensive team. They have a one-two punch at running back, and the uncertainty they had at quarterback seems to have been resolved. We expect to see Karsten Sween at quarterback.
Wyoming is coming off of a loss to San Diego State, and they now have three losses and will be looking for a win.
BYU is still undefeated in the conference race and there's a bunch of with two losses. So, we have to work hard to get this win. If we don't, then nothing will matter from here on out.
That's where we're at.
On the carryover from last year's Wyoming game
Last year, Wyoming put a whopping on us. They have a lot of the same faces on defense this year that they had last year. Their front seven is fast and aggressive and they're corners are very good.
We didn't play well against them last year. The scored on an interception and the final score was 31-15. But, it wasn't as close as the score would have indicated.
On returning to work off a bye week
Today, we're returning to work after having three days off. We have to get the team back in game-prep mode. Today will be a light day. Tomorrow will be the heavy work day and then we'll start to back off as the week progresses.
On the benefits of the bye week
Bradon Godfrey has had a bad back the last couple weeks, and even missed the TCU game because of it. He was limited against Colorado State but we expect to have him back this week. Freddie Brown suffered a concussion and returned to practice last week, but he wasn't allowed contact. We expect to have him back this week too.
Stevenson Sylvester nursed a turf toe. Joe Jiannoni rested his ankle and Robert Johnson rested his shoulder, but those two will be dealing with their injuries for the rest of the season. They will just have to go out there and do what they can do with the injuries they have.
We expect everyone else will return with fresh legs this week.
On what to expect from Wyoming
They are still trying to get bowl eligible. I think with three losses that the conference title is out of reach for them, but they need one more win to get bowl eligible.
I think their mindset, however, is two more wins will get them into a bowl. I think it's going to take seven wins this year to get into a bowl and I'm sure that's their mindset too.
On playing the rest of the regular season in the state of Utah
That's no comfort at all. The only comfort I have is in the consistent play we've gotten from Brian Johnson at quarterback and with our running game. Given the outcome of last year's game with Wyoming, we're still going to have to work hard to get this win on Saturday.
