SALT LAKE CITY - A 12-4 run to end the first half and timely shooting in the second half led the University of Utah women's basketball team to a 72-61 victory over TCU (13-5, 3-1 MWC) Thursday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes were nursing a 21-19 lead late in the first half. But a Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) three-pointer sparked a Utah outburst. Utah (12-6, 5-0 MWC) sandwiched a pair of free throws from Halie Sawyer (Fr., Panguitch, Utah) and a three-pointer from Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) around a Hanna Biernacka score for TCU. Whipple's triple put Utah on top 29-21 with 2:50 left until halftime.
A pair of Lorie Butler-Rayford free throws pulled the Lady Frogs within six. But Whipple and Warburton hit the last two buckets of the half to send the Utes into intermission with a double-digit advantage, 33-23.
Utah opened up a 13-point advantage, nearly seven minutes into the second half. Warburton, who had just come back from the locker room after suffering a bloody nose early in the second half, hit a three-pointer at the 13:56 mark. Whipple scored on the Utes' next possession to make it 45-32.
But TCU clawed back into it. A pair of buckets from Biernacka and a three-pointer from Helen Roden keyed an 11-2 Lady Frog run. Utah's lead had been whittled to four, 47-43, midway through the second half. Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) scored off her own offensive rebound and Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.) got free underneath on the Utes' next possession. Those two buckets pushed the Utah lead back to eight.
Perry put Utah's lead back into double digits with just more than six minutes remaining. She buried a triple as the shot clock expired to make it 58-48. TCU pulled back within seven on a three-pointer from Ashley Davis. But a pair of Morgan Warburton free throws and another timely three virtually iced it for the Utes. With three minutes remaining, Whipple hit her second trey of the game, again as the shot clock expired. That basket gave Utah a 65-53 advantage.
From there, Utah cruised to the 11-point victory. The Utes hit seven-of-eight from the free-throw line over the final 1:03 to put the victory on ice. It was Utah's second victory over a Top 25 team this season, after knocking off then-No. 25 New Mexico back on Jan. 7.
Warburton led four Utes in double figures, scoring 18 points. She also dished out a game-high five assists. Perry poured in 15 points, while Whipple added 14. Warner tacked on 10 for Utah. Joh-Teena Filipe (Soph., Salt Lake City) led Utah to a 40-30 advantage on the boards and narrowly missed a double-double. She finished with 14 rebounds and nine points.
TCU was paced by a game-high 21 points from Biernacka. Roden came off the bench to tack on 11.
Utah is back in action again Saturday, hosting the Air Force Academy in a scheduled 3:45 p.m. contest. The game will follow a men's contest between Utah and Wyoming. All men's ticketholders will receive admission to the women's game, which will begin 35 minutes following the conclusion of the men's contest.
