SALT LAKE CITY -
Nicolle Ford and Ashley Postell have come through big many times after a teammate's miscue on an event. But in Utah's 196.600-193.400 victory over Minnesota, freshmen Kristina Baskett and Nina Kim helped diffuse mistakes by Ford and Postell on the floor exercise. True, Ford and Postell faced a much more pressure situation week ago in Michigan, when their clutch beam performances secured a Utah victory after two teammate falls. In contrast, a Utah victory was never in doubt against the No. 20 ranked Gophers, who suffered three falls on their opening event--the uneven bars. Still, Baskett and Kim's performances certainly took some of the sting out of their All-America teammates' mistakes on the final rotation.
It also allowed the freshman to finish 1-2 in the all-around, with Baskett surging ahead in the final event to edge Kim, 39.350-39.325. Ford finished third with a 39.125 after a rare off night on the floor, where she scored a 9.65. Postell, in the lead after three events, couldn't handle a soaring Arabian double front early in her routine. "My hand missed when I tried to grab my leg," explained Postell, who fell out of bounds.
Ironically, Marsden's first kudos after the meet went Ford and Postell. "You guys have bailed the team out so many times, it's time someone else took a turn," he said. Actually, Baskett didn't take turns very often when it came to victories. In addition to her all-around championship, she won or tied for first on vault (9.85), bars (9.90) and floor (9.875). Postell and Gritt Hofmann tied for first on the beam, each with a 9.925, while Kim and Ford (9.90) tied Baskett for the uneven bar title.
The Gopher seemed unnerved by a season-best crowd of 12,746 on their opening event. But the Gophers' woes on the uneven bars had no effect on the Utes, who after a first-event score of 49.025 on the vault, produced a season-best 49.40 on the bars. Utah improves to 8-0 with the victory while Minnesota dropped to 8-2.
