WACO, TEX. -- University of Utah senior defensive back Eric Weddle has been named to the 2006 AFCA Coaches' All-America Team announced today by the American Football Coaches Association.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. This All-America team is the only one chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best -- the coaches themselves.
Weddle ended the regular season with 58 tackles and six interceptions for the Utes. He currently ranks No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference and No. 11 in the nation in interceptions. In addition to his interception totals, Weddle has accounted for eight touchdowns for Utah this season. He has three defensive scores (two interception returns, one fumble return) and five offensive scores (four rushing, one passing).
Weddle was also honored as an All-American recently by the website Rivals.com. The website honored him as their "Utility" player on their All-American defensive team.
"The nation's most versatile player has done just about everything imaginable for Utah this season," said the website.
Weddle and his Utah teammates will wrap up the 2006 season on Dec. 23, when they face Tulsa in the Bell Helicopters Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas.
