SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's three seniors led the No. 22/23-ranked Ute women to a 79-47 victory over Southern Utah Friday night at the Huntsman Center.
Julie Larsen (Logan, Utah) scored a season-high 18 points, including 5-of-6 shooting from behind the three-point arc, to lead all scorers. Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) saw her streak of double-figure scoring reach 50 games. Shona Thorburn (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.
Utah never trailed in the contest and the game was tied just once, 5-5 with 15 minutes left in the first half. Utah led 19-13 midway through the first half, when Thorburn and Larsen hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 10-0 run. That spurt gave Utah a 29-13 advantage. The margin remained in double digits for the remainder of the contest.
Camie Oakey (Jr., Flower Mound, Texas) scored on one of Thorburn's 10 helpers four minutes into the second half, pushing Utah's advantage to 20 points, 44-24. Six minutes later, Heidi Carlsen (Jr., St. George, Utah) hit a three-pointer to push the Utah lead to 32, 60-28.
Utah's defense, which forced 25 Southern Utah turnovers, held the Thunderbirds to just seven points over the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Utes outscored SUU 23-7 over that span.
Utah's lead ballooned to 35 points three times late in the game. The Utes converted at a 52.6 percent clip from the field, while shooting 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from behind the three-point arc. All 13 Utah players in uniform saw action and nine of them cracked the scoring column.
Southern Utah was paced by Cassie Hahl, who tallied 14 points. She hit 4-of-6 from three-point range for the Thunderbirds. Julie Stradling, who was 2-of-2 on three-point attempts, was the only other SUU player in double figures with 10 points.
Utah's victory wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule. The Utes' next outing will be the Mountain West Conference opener Jan. 5 at No. 16 New Mexico. That game is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff and will be broadcast nationwide on CSTV (College Sports Television).
