Beardall Named Groza Award Semifinalist

SALT LAKE CITY - The Palm Beach County Sports Institute has announced the 20 semifinalists for the 2005 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl. University of Utah senior Dan Beardall is a semifinalist for the award.
Beardall, this week's reigning Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, is one of 20 student-athletes to be named semifinalists. Beardall tied a Utah school record this past Saturday against Wyoming. He converted all three of his field-goal attempts, giving him 11 straight and matching a streak of 11 by former Ute Andre Guardi in 1985.

Beardall became just the ninth kicker in Utah history to make 25 or more consecutive PATs earlier this season. He is currently 29-of-30 on extra-point attempts.
Beardall is 4-of-4 in field-goal attempts of 45 yards or longer. He made a career-long 47-yard attempt against San Diego State and has a 46- and two 45-yard field goals to his credit as well.
Beardall is a two-time MWC Special Teams Player of the Week--winning the honor in his first-ever collegiate start against Arizona and again for his play against Wyoming.
The three finalists for the Lou Groza Award are announced on Nov. 21 and are honored at the 14th Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Dinner on Dec. 6 at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott. The 2005 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award winner is announced on Dec. 8 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show in Orlando, Florida.
The award, now in its 14th year, is named for NFL Hall-of-Fame kicker Lou Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Nicknamed "The Toe," Groza was one of the first people to truly make kicking an art form and he helped usher into football the idea that a player could be used exclusively for kicking.
