Utah held a press conference today announcing its acceptance to an Emerald Bowl invitation. Some quotes follow from Utah Athletics Director Dr. Chris Hill, Emerald Bowl Executive Director Gary Cavalli and Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham.
Dr. Chris Hill: "We are very excited to go to San Francisco and play in the Emerald Bowl. We feel like this is a great destination for our fans and that they are excited right now about the Utah football team. We'd like to see lots of red in the stands, like last year at the Fiesta Bowl. Tickets in the Utah section are on sale on our website right now at Utahtickets.com or by phone at 801-581-UTIX."
Gary Cavalli: "We've wanted to have Utah in our bowl game for a long time. We considered a couple of options ... (but) after Utah's thrilling overtime victory over BYU, we think we're catching Utah on a high ... The more I thought about it, the more I liked Utah, so I got up yesterday morning and called Chris (Hill interjects, "And I said `yes!'").
"Alex Smith was of course the No. 1 draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers, and the No. 1 overall draft pick, a year ago, so there is a lot of awareness of the Utah football program in the Bay Area."
(in answer to a question regarding Utah's opponent)
"We have an affiliation with the Pac-10, but we have the No. 6 pick and so we won't get a team this year unless Stanford beats Notre Dame and ASU beats Arizona. So we've been talking to the ACC. We'll be looking at the winner of the North Carolina State-Maryland game, Virginia or Georgia Tech, barring an upset (by the Pac-10 teams). Of course, we'd love to have Stanford."
Kyle Whittingham: "I'd like to thank Gary and the Emerald Bowl committee. We finished the regular season on a positive note and this football team deserves to go to a bowl game. We have a huge contingent of players from California and can't wait to get there."
