SALT LAKE CITY - Mallory Miller's goal in the 30th minute was all Arizona needed to defeat Utah 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship on Thursday night at Ute Field. The Utes outshot the Wildcats 13-7 and had a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal, but could not finish any of their scoring chances.
A Ute Field record crowd of 1,650 was treated to two thrilling games. In the first game of the night, Weber State got past No. 4 seeded BYU in shootout, 4-3, after the game was tied 1-1 through two overtimes. It will be a battle of the Wildcats on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (MST) at Ute Field as Arizona plays Weber State to advance to the third round.
Miller, who was named the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year earlier in the day, provided the one-goal difference in the game with her 18th score of the season. Miller took a pass from Kelly Nelson out in front of the pack and fired a 10-yard shot from right to left that got past Ute keeper Ashley Mason.
The Wildcats (10-7-3), playing their 12th one-goal game of the season, then had the luxury of playing conservative the rest of the way. After surrendering the first half goal, Mason only had to make one save the rest of the night on a shot by Nicole Scheid in the 77th minute.
Utah (14-7-1) outshot Arizona 8-2 in the second half and had a 4-1 advantage in corners for the game. However, the Utes were simply off on their crosses and corners, and had trouble penetrating the stingy UA defense.
Three and a half minutes into the second half Adele Letro had a nice look at the frame on the right side but fired her 15-yard shot high. Kim Lloyd also missed a shot high to the right in the 51st minute.
One of the Utes' best scoring opportunities came in the 72nd minute. McKenzie Joyner played the ball from the left sideline to the center of the field, where Letro headed the ball toward the net and forced McCall Smith to make the save. Smith, a native of Salt Lake City, made seven stops in front of her friends and family to record her eight shutout of the season.
Utah's final shot of the game came from Amanda Feigt in the 87th minute, but was saved by McCall. Fiegt had a game-high four shots on goal.
Nonetheless, it was a successful season for the Utes, who won the Mountain West Conference championship and finished with 14 wins for the second-most in school history.
