SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The University of Utah men and women's swimming and diving teams started their season off by defeating UC San Diego in a dual meet Saturday. The women won 13 of 16 events to beat the Tritons 180-116, while the men won 12 of 16 events to win by a score of 160.5-138.5. The men and women improve to 1-0 on the season, with the women marking their tenth straight dual-meet victory.
The women started out strong, claiming first and third place in the 200 medley relay. The team of Leah Jensen, Amber Walter, Jennifer Fredsall and Amy Barfield finished with a time of 1 minute, 47.50 seconds to take top honors in the event. Shannon McQueen, Caitlin Tidwell, Alison McInturff and Amber Walker tallied a time of 1 minute, 52.13 seconds to finish third
In the 1000 free, Rachael Curci (10:29.40), Adrienne Coburn (10:41.18) and Meghan Fleisch (10:56.82) swept the top three spots respectively for the Utes. McInturff edged out McQueen in the 200 free to finish first with a time of 1 minute, 55.13 seconds, to McQueen's 1 minute 55.84 seconds. In the 100 back, Marissa Martin tallied a time of 59.69 seconds to place first, with fellow teammate Jensen touching the wall in 59.87 seconds to finish second.
Walter won the 100 breast, finishing in 1 minute, 04.28 seconds, while Fredsall won the 200 fly (2:07.60) by over two seconds, with Michelle Blair finishing third in the event (2:12.45). In the 50 and 100 free, Barefield placed second with times of 24.35 seconds and 53.55 seconds respectively, while McInturff place third (54.23) in the 100 free. In the 200 back, Martin (2:05.91), McQueen (2:08.33) and Jensen (2:11.28) competed for the Utes to finish one, two and three respectively.
In the diving events, Kelsey Patterson placed first in the 1-meter event with a score of 243.23, while Anna Braszkiwiecz finished second with 242.77 points. In the 3-meter event, Patterson finished second with 275.25 points, and Braszkiwiecz placed third with 264 points.
For the men, Jeremy Clark (9:39.32), Adam Oliver (9:40.19) and Eric Jorgensen (9:57.70) finished in the top three spots, respectively in the 1000 free. In the 200 free and 100 fly, George Evans placed second with a time of 1 minute, 44.83 seconds and 52.54 seconds respectively.
Junior Andrew Cole took top honors in the 100 and 200 back, finishing in 52.11 seconds and 1 minute, 53.17 seconds respectively. Michel DeCarolis placed first in the 200 breast (2:11.88) and second in the 100 breast with a time of 1 minute, 00.12 seconds and Andrew Brown finished first in the 200 fly (1:54.62).
Senior Jonathan Larsen won the 50 and 100 free events with times of 20.35 seconds and 4.63 seconds respectively. David Maasberg finished third in the 50 free (21.53) as well. In the 500 free, Clark (4:40.50) and Oliver (4:43.84) finished first and third respectively.
In the 1-meter diving event, senior Sterling Richards placed first, tallying 299.17 points. Richards was followed by fellow Utes Jacob Jewett (244.80), Andrew Jones (243.45) and Damien Brown (233.10). Richards also won the 3-meter event with a score of 329.02, with Jones finishing second (262.05 points).
Up next, the Utes travel to Denver, Colo., to compete in a two day meet with the University of Denver Nov. 3-4.
