SALT LAKE CITY -
Each week, a Ute gymnast will contribute an excerpt for the Utah Gymnastics Diary. This week's edition of the Utah Gymnastics Journal is provided by senior Gritt Hofmann.
Hi Everyone,
Our training continues to go well and we are all getting a lot accomplished. It's been great to be back in Utah. It's fun to see everyone again after the summer break and get to know the freshmen better. I thought it would be interesting to let you know what everyone did over the summer. Also, I bet you want to know what my big surprise is. Well, keep reading.
Our freshmen: Carissa trained at Charter Oaks and worked at "Team Physical," a physical therapy facility. She also got to go to the U.S. Olympic Trials. Jessica had her first job this summer as a receptionist at her father's business. She also went camping with her family and got to go to Florida. Ashley competed at USA Championships in June where she finished 13th...not her lucky number. She also visited her boyfriend in Colorado Springs where she worked at a gymnastics camp. Katie went to Mexico and New York with her family. She also kept training at American Twisters and got her wisdom teeth pulled (what a fun activity for the summer).
The sophomores: Steph and Rach went to France for a four-week study abroad class. They said it was a blast. Stephanie came back to Salt Lake and did the second half of summer school. Rachel went home where she worked for her uncle and trained at Southern California Elite Gymnastics Academy (SCEGA). Queenie worked all summer teaching at Southern Tier Gymnastics Academy (STGA). Nikki did take a two-week break to work at a gymnastics camp in New York with Riff and Nat. She got a big surprise at camp when her boyfriend came all the way from Utah to visit her.
The juniors: Nat and Riffy visited each other and Queenie, and also worked at the camp in New York. Natalie worked as a server in a restaurant and trained at Flytz Gymnastics. At the beginning of the summer, Riffy trained in New Hampshire at Atlantic Coast Gymnastics. She also got to go on a vacation trip to Florida with her family. Unfortunately Kristen spent most of the summer trying to recover from a very bad case of mono. No more kissing boys Riffy! Dom visited Kuli in Colorado Springs, and went home for six weeks (too bad it was winter in South Africa). Then she came back to Salt Lake for the second session of summer school classes, and almost got deported. It was all very scary when Homeland Security showed up at her room at 3:00 a.m. She ended up going back to South Africa for another two weeks, but luckily we have her back now! Gabi was traveling a lot as well. She went to L.A. first for one week and then to Japan for another two weeks to visit friends. The rest of the summer, she spent at home in Budapest, training with her old coaches and working in a Karaoke Club. She also spent a day in Budapest showing Ute gymnastics meet director Anne Marie Jensen and her husband Mark around.
Now to the seniors: AB was home in Reno working for her father as a dental assistant and doing a lot of rehabbing for her ankle that she had surgery on last spring. Annabeth also trained at Starz Gymnastics. And I can't forget! AB got ENGAGED at the beginning of summer and visited her fiancée in North Carolina. He is stationed there in the Army, training to be a battlefield medic.
So now you can guess what my big surprise is: I got ENGAGED over the summer as well. After I traveled with my family here in the states for a month seeing all the national parks in the west, I flew back to Germany for two months, where my (now) fiancée came to visit and ask me to marry him. It was very exciting! He asked my father for his permission and did the whole speech in German. My brother had to help him though. I also went to Paris and Minneapolis (where my boyfriend lives) and had a great time.
So yeah, over the summer, everyone traveled a lot, got to spend some time with family and friends and most of us worked hard to be able to spend some money on our upcoming season trips (watch out Mall of America, here we come). Of course, we did not forget to train and therefore everyone is in great shape and looking forward to the beginning of the season. You should come to practice and check us out... (M, T, TH and F 1:30-5:30). Also, check out our photo site for new photos from our hip hop class: Photos
Well, this week is our last week of optional practice before things are getting structured by Greg, Megan and Aki. Now the fun begins!
GO RED ROCKS! GO UTES!

Don't forget to read Riffy's journal next week.
