OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Utah swimming and diving team completed competition at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. Both the men and women finished in fourth, with 583 and 499 points respectively. On the final day of the championships the Utes had three swimmers win events and all three put up NCAA provisional qualifying times.
For the Ute men, Jonathan Larsen won the 100 free, with a NCAAB provisional qualifying time of 44.40. Cody Rempfer also swam an NCAAB provisional qualifying time, winning the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.02. Andrew Cole finished second in the 200 back with a time of 1:47.60. Evan Castro came in third in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:01.71. The 400 free relay team of Larsen, Matan Ratz, Cole and Castro finished third with a time of 3:02.86. Also Eric Jorgensen added a fourth-place finish with a time of 15:57.78, in the 1650 free. Brigham Young won the men's competition with a score of 775.50.
The women were led on the final day by freshman Rachel Curci. Curci won the 1650 free, with an NCAAB provisional qualifying time of 16:43.05. In the 100 free, Amy Barefield put up a time of 51.42, placing her second. Utah's 400 free relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:27.84. The 400 free relay team included Barefield, Alison McInturff, Jamie Trapp and Melissa Young. Marissa Martin added a fourth-place finish in the 200 back (2:02.07). BYU also won the women's championship with a team score of 725.
The Utah men finish with a fourth-place finish at the conference championships and finished second in the regular season standings at 3-1. Following the championships, Sterling Richards was awarded the Men's 2003-04 MWC Diver of the Year. The women placed fourth at the conference championships and earned a shared regular season conference championship for the first time in school history.
