HONOLULU (AP) - Kristin Haynie made a coast-to-coast layup with 2 seconds left to give No. 13 Michigan State a 56-54 victory over Utah in the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Friday.
Haynie scored the game's last six points and finished with 12 to help Michigan State (3-0) thwart the Utes' comeback.
After Utah's Marie Warner hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 54 with 8 seconds remaining, Haynie wove through the Utes' defense for the game-winning layup. She then intercepted Utah's inbounds pass at midcourt to seal the victory.
Liz Shimek led the Spartans with 15 points and Lindsay Bowen added 13.
Warner paced the Utes (1-2) with 12 points.
Utah, which trailed most of the game, took its first lead at 48-46 on Warner's jumper with 5:25 remaining. Her shot capped a 25-11 run by the Utes, erasing a 12-point deficit.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, when Utah made just 7 of 23 shots and Michigan State shot 9-of-30. The Spartans took an 11-3 lead to start the game and entered halftime ahead 24-19.
