Three starters from Utah's 9-0, No. 7 ranked football team have been named CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII recipients. Junior quarterback Alex Smith and senior defensive back Morgan Scalley are first-team selections for the second straight year while Toone is first-time choice. All three will be now placed on the ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-American. Scalley was a first-team Academic All-American last year.
Smith graduated last May with a 3.74 cumulative GPA in economics. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in economics. Scalley graduated last May with a 3.96 GPA in mass communication and is now in the MBA program at Utah. Toone has a 3.76 GPA in communication.
All three are all-conference candidates and Smith and Scalley won second-team honors in 2003 and were preseason first-team picks prior to this season. Smith, a Heisman Trophy candidate, leads the nation in passing efficiency and points responsible for. He leads the MWC in passing yards per game and is No. 7 in the nation in total offense. He has thrown 24 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Smith has rushed for nearly 50.0 yards per game and eight touchdowns. He is a five-time MWC offensive player of the week selection.
Scalley was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 8. He leads the MWC and ranks sixth in the nation in interceptions (5). He has 40 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, 2 fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal. He has scored touchdowns on a school-record 88-yard fumble return and a 90-yard kickoff return.
Toone is Utah's leading tackler and ranks third in the conference with 84 total tackles. He also has three fumble recoveries. His career-high 14 tackles vs. Air Force is the best by a Ute this season.
