SALT LAKE CITY -
Each week, a Ute gymnast contributes an excerpt for the Utah Gymnastics Diary. This week's edition of the Utah Gymnastics Journal is provided by sophomore Stephanie Lim.
Wow - it just seems like this school year is flying by! Last week was our first week of "combinations," where we work in and out of the major skills in our routines. The week started with everyone getting back into the swing of things after four days of fall break. Even with the time off, the entire team easily made the transition into combinations. Everyone really looks good and we are constantly making improvements. All of our new toys (the bungee and automated video) are adding a great way for us to learn new skills and perfect the old ones.
Katie and Ashley worked on their floor choreography with our volunteer coach Mary Wright. They were the last to get their new music and choreography, and we all got to see them strut their stuff the next day before workout started, whether they wanted to or not - right Katie? Get ready Ute fans--wait till you see this year's floor routines. Mary did a great job and boy can this team ever "bust a move."
On Thursday the "Red Rocks" put on their smiles for this year's picture day. Of course we can't show you the finished product quite yet but as you can see from the pictures on our multimedia site | PICTURE DAY |, the whole group looked AMAZING! After hitting the make-up chair with Russ, as if we needed any, we did head shots and a team picture. Later, the freshman got a taste of our competitive stylin' with some of last year's leos and some action shots.
On Saturday morning we met up at Sugarhouse Park to take part in the "Walk for Hope" 5K in support of breast cancer awareness. We began by helping out our aerobics instructor, Jenny, lead a warm-up for the runners / walkers. There seemed to be a good turnout for the event and we all had a great time. Everyone ran the 5K. AB and Katie tied for first on our team, with Riffy coming in close behind. You can check out our multimedia site for pictures from Saturday too | WALK |.
Afterwards, some of us wandered the farmer's market in downtown Salt Lake, but of course the big event of the day was FOOTBALL! Nearly all of the "Red Rocks" were at the game to cheer on our fellow Utes! This is my second year to be in the "Muss." What a blast! We are still undefeated (6-0) and now ranked #7 in the first BCS poll of the year, thanks to a 46-16 win against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Well, that's it for this week. As always, everyone's been enthusiastic and really doing a great job of cheering each other on and helping each other out. There really seems to be a feeling that this year's team is something special. You should really drop by and check us out. We love visitors and always welcome an opportunity to show our stuff. Be sure and come back next week for Queenie's entry.
GO UTES! Steph
