SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving team opened up the 2003-04 season on Friday, with the Don Reddish Relays. The relays matched Utah against Brigham Young. The team honored longtime Ute swim coach Don Reddish as they held a naming ceremony prior to the meet, in which school alumni from many of his teams attended. In the meet the Utah women won by a score of 148-140, while the men fell to BYU 152-136.
For the women Kristen Kaiser was on the winning relay team in five events, 300 butterfly (2:56.59), 4 x 100 medley (4:03.34), 800 free relay (7:40.39), 500 free relay (4:36.26) and the 1500 free relay (15:23.19). Freshman Alison McInturff was on the winning 300 butterfly, 300 breast (3:17.48), 4 x 100 medley and 500 free relay, as she finished on top in four events. Meghan Demchuk also was on four winning teams including the 300 butterfly, 4 x 100 medley, 800 free relay and 400 medley relay (3:54.25). The Utes are 1-0 in overall competition.
On the men's side Cody Rempfer was on four winning teams, 300 butterfly (2:32.71), 300 breast relay, 4 x 100 medley (3:32.99) and the 200 free relay (1:23.79). Senior Trent Shino along with Evan Castro and John Leeman each won in two events. The men had a disqualification in the 400 medley relay. Utah is now 0-1 in competiton.
"Both teams showed alot of heart." comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "The women got off to a great start, well the guys DQ cost them. This is a program that showed it is headed in the right direction. It was also great to honor coach Reddish."
