The 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Men's and Women's At-Large teams were released Thursday. Included on those teams were University of Utah skiers Jernej Bukovec and Petra Svet.
Bukovec, a native of Slovenia, earned second-team honors with a 3.654 GPA. The junior is a three-time All-American in the slalom and had five top-10 showings in the slalom and giant slalom in 2002. Bukovec placed seventh in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom this season at the NCAA Championships to lead the Utes to a third-place team finish.
Svet, also a native of Slovenia, received third-team honors with a 3.702 GPA. The senior is a two-time All-American in the slalom and skied to a third-place finish this season at the NCAA Championships. Svet posted three top-three finishes in 2002. In 2001, she was the NCAA Slalom Champion and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Female Athlete of the Year.
The at-large team encompassed the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. The team was voted on by CoSIDA members from within the District VIII states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and the province of British Columbia. The all-district first team selections advance to the national ballot, which will be released June 11.
