SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah ski team held its annual awards banquet and luncheon this week to recognize the top achievements of the 2002 season. After capping off a third place finish at the NCAA Skiing Championships, the team earned many accolades both on and off the slopes.
Four athletes earned first team All-America honors, while seven earned second team All-America status. Fifteen of the student athletes received recognition with Academic All-America honors.
The Utes recognized senior Petter Svendsen with the Alf Engen Sportsmanship Award. The honor is given out yearly to the outstanding junior or senior who has best demonstrated the most inspirational qualities to the team. This award takes into consideration outstanding competitive achievement as well as noteworthy leadership and sportsmanship. Svendsen was a second team All-America selection in classic and skate and finished the season ranked seventh in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association.
Torin Koos, a 2002 Olympic Games participant as well as a first team All-American in classic and second team All-American in skate, was honored with Utah's prestigious C.D. Reddish Memorial Award. The award is given to the graduating senior or upper classman who has contributed most to the team not only in results, but with respect to community relations and promoting the sport as a diplomatic ambassador.
The David Novelle Outstanding Skier Award for the male athlete who has been one of the most influential factors to the success of our team with outstanding results through the entire competitive season, was given to first-year competitor Pierre Olsson. Olsson was a silver medalists at the NCAA championships and a first team All-American in both disciplines of alpine skiing. He finished the season ranked second overall in the RMISA.
Sophomore April Mancuso was given the Toril Forland Outstanding Skier Award for being the female athlete who has been an important factor to the success and accomplishments of the women's ski team. Mancuso earned a silver medal at the NCAA championships in the giant slalom, earning All-America honors. She was ranked second in the RMISA's final standings.
The 2002 team exemplified the reputation of excellence - on the slopes and in the classroom - that the University of Utah ski team has prided itself on.
