SALT LAKE CITY -
Annie Medcalf, a member of Utah's gymnastics team from 2001-02, had a promising career cut short when a tumor was discovered in her vertebra. She underwent surgery last spring that required the fusing of five vertebrae, along with the removal of the tumor. Medcalf, a former U.S. National Team member from Stow, Ohio, has remained with the Utah team as an undergraduate student-assistant coach while she completes her academic degree. She is also writing a weekly diary.
First of all I just want to thank all of our fans-you guys are great! We had a huge turnout at our practice meet last Saturday. Cameron (the best team manager ever!) started counting and got to over 300, but he had to stop because there were just too many of you. He figured there were about 400-500 fans that came to see the Utes. No one on the team was expecting that big of a crowd, but it was a very pleasant surprise. The Red Rocks always love when their fans come to watch.
The meet was also very helpful for the freshmen. It is hard for new Utes to come in without ever seeing a Utah gymnastics meet and understand what it is like to have 12,000 people in the stands cheering for you. They got a little taste of that on Saturday and I think they are getting really excited for the Huntsman Center floor on January 10th.
We had our annual team Christmas party this past Sunday. It is a good excuse to get all dressed up and have a nice dinner. We always do Secret Santa, so the week before the party we give out little gifts and then at the party we reveal whom we had and give them our big gift. Everyone had a wonderful time, but we all had to hurry home to study for finals.
Finals week is always really fun (just kidding)!!! Finals week is extremely tough, but the team is tougher! Greg changed practices so that the girls have more time to study if they need. The only thing required for the team is to come in Monday through Friday and do conditioning. Other than that, training is optional so they can come in and do what they need to feel ready for January. It works out well, because the girls have time to study hard but they also get their job done in the gym at their own pace.
After this Friday the gymnasts go home until December 26. It will be a well-deserved break from school and gymnastics and everyone is anxious to see their families for the holidays. Well folks, that's all for now.
Hopefully we will see you all in January! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
