11/5/2002 12:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving
Nov. 5, 2002
THIS WEEK:
Utah will swim at Pacific on Friday, Nov. 8, at 3:00 p.m. (PT), both the men and women will compete. On Saturday, Nov. 9, the women's team will swim in a double dual meet against San Jose State and UC Santa Cruz at 1:00 p.m. (PT), while the men's team will swim against UC Santa Cruz.
UTE NOTES:
The women are coming off of their first win over BYU in school history, and are off to their best start ever at 3-0 (2-0 in conference). The men are also off to a good start at 1-1 (0-1 in conference), this is their best start in three years. Cody Rempfer was the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week with his performance against UC Irvine.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
The Pacific women's team is ranked 22nd in the nation and should be the best team the women compete against this year. On the men's side, Pacific is the defending Big West Conference Champions. Last year Utah's men beat Pacific 147.5-80.5, and the women lost 127-94. San Jose State has a new coach and is a team on the rise, while UC Santa Cruz is a young team with good depth, it will be the Utes' first meeting with both teams.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK:
The Utah women beat BYU for the first time ever 135-112, moving to 3-0 (2-0 in conference). Utah rode solid performances by Kristen Kaiser, Neringa Statkeviciute and Loren Sweny, each of which won three events. The men fell to the Cougars 161.50-81.50, despite three two-event winners, Evan Castro, Jon Larsen and Cody Rempfer.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MICHAEL LITZINGER:
"This week we swim against Pacific, it should be a great meet. Their women are ranked 22nd in the nation, and their guys are defending conference champions. The meets should be very competitive. It's nice to swim against teams that you don't see during the conference schedule."
