SALT LAKE CITY -
Annie Medcalf, a member of Utah's gymnastics team from 2001-02, had a promising career cut short when a tumor was discovered in her vertebra. She underwent surgery last spring that required the fusing of five vertebrae, along with the removal of the tumor. Medcalf, a former U.S. National Team member from Stow, Ohio, has remained with the Utah team as an undergraduate student-assistant coach while she completes her academic degree. She is also writing a weekly diary.
UTES or Runnin' UTES?
This past Saturday the UTES were involved in the "Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer". It was a 5K walk or run, and of course the girls ran! Former Ute Lindsay Tanner joined the team once again and took part in the race as well. Do you want to know what's really incredible? Our coach, Megan Marsden. . .she's amazing! She ran the 5K with the girls and came in third out of our whole team. Not too bad for a mom-HAHA. (just kidding, we love you Megan!) The team also spiced things up a little bit and led a salsa style warm-up routine to get everyone's heart pumping before the race. The UTES had a great time and they were all so glad to be involved in such a great cause.
Unfortunately, I do have some sad news. Last Wednesday night, our dear friend, Raymond Kesler, passed away. Ray was the Utah gymnastics custodian and dedicated fan for 25 years. He really loved our team and we all loved him. We always felt as though he was one of us. Members of the team, as well as Greg and Megan, attended his funeral yesterday. We loved having him be a part of our program for so long and he will truly be missed!
Everything else here is going well. Preseason always seems like a long process. It's much more fun to be in front of our 10,000 fans. We're all working hard to be ready for you and hope you're looking as forward to seeing us as we are to seeing you. That's all from the "Red Rocks" for this week, but I will leave you with this: "Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by the attitude we bring to life." So, always try to look for the good, even in the toughest of situations!
